Hollywood's Movie Cars Are Almost as Old as Its Movies

For almost as long as movies have been around, there have been movie cars and since the very beginning, movie cars have invariably been involved in some kind of a chase. The first movie car chase took place in a 1903 black and white silent film called Runaway Match. And the genre continues to sustain its relevance after more than 100 years.

When movie cars aren’t chasing or being chased, they’re often driven off a cliff, bridge, rooftop parking lot or unfinished highway overpass. Some even travel through time, an interesting metaphor when you consider the longevity of the movie car so far. And most movie cars, believe it or not, are merely used as background. The ever-present, hardly ever noticed, nondescript, era relevant, movie car.

Movie cars are so ingrained in our culture that there’s even a jet-propelled land-speeder (wheels not so obvious in the digitally re-mastered version) driven by Luke Skywalker in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (originally released as Star Wars). Proving that, at least in George Lucas’s vision of the future (err, sorry, past), cars and movie cars will be with us, for a long, long time (ago).

Whether racing, crashing, time traveling, flying, or simply looking great parked along a stretch of roadway in the San Fernando Valley (pretending to be anything but the SFV), almost everyone has a favorite movie car. We invite you explore the photos, stories, and community that is and always will be the world of the movie car.

If you’re so inclined, join our Movie Car Discussion Forum (Movie Car Talk) and possibly contribute to the future of movie cars with your questions and comments. (We’re movie car enthusiasts and involved in the industry.) No promises, but we hope this website will develop into something that is both entertaining and informative. It’s free and always will be, give it a try. We promise not to make too much fun of you if we don’t agree with you pick for the best movie car, ever.

Check back soon, in the weeks and months to come, we will be adding to this site daily (Now that the Writers Guild of America is on strike we’ll probably have a lot more time on our hands to work on this site).
